Balinese Breed Profile

Balinese Cats are basically Siamese Cats but with a longer, flowing silky coats and beautiful plumed tails. Balinese come in the same variety of colours as Siamese with the exception of Cinnamon and Fawn. All have blue eyes and are pointed but some also have Tabby or Tortie markings as well. Below is a gallery of Balinese Cats in all the different colours and patterns including a description of each colour and pattern. In the UK we are lucky enough to be able to register and show our cats and kittens with three organisations. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), The International Cat Association (TICA) and Felis Britannica (FB). We have added the GCCF breed numbers as well as the FIFE EMS codes which denote the colour and pattern of each of the different cats. (TICA do not use breed numbers) In addition we have added the Balinese Standard Of Points for GCCF, FIFE and TICA.

We are very grateful to the photographers and owners of the cats below for allowing us to use these photographs. The cats below are a cross section of as many different colours and patterns that were made available to us. If you have any photographs that you think we may be able to use then please contact our webmaster and we will update this page.

Balinese Colours and Breed Numbers

Traditional colours that most people recognise are Seal Point, Blue Point, Chocolate Point and Lilac Point. There are also four other colours and they are Caramel Point, Red Point, Apricot Point and Cream Point. These eight colours are explained in further detail below. In addition there are also Tabby Points which can be in any of the colours listed and Tortie Points and Tortie Tabby Points which can come on any of the colours listed except for Apricot (see the 'Red Series' section further down the page).

Underneath the photographs below are the GCCF Standard Of Points for each colour and pattern. They should be used in conjunction with the 'General Balinese Type Standard' and the 'Standard List of Withholding Faults' which can be found on the Balinese Standard Of Points page. (in a addition the breed standards for TICA and FB/FIFE can also found by visiting the Balinese Standard Of Points page.)

A Caramel is a Blue or Lilac cat that has at least one copy of the Dilute Modifier Gene that modifies the colours into Caramel. You may here Caramels referred to as Blue or Lilac based Caramels.

Caramel is not recognised with FIFE so the breed number would be dependent on if the cat was a Blue or Lilac based Caramel. Red Series Balinese Cats

Red series Balinese Cats come in three basic colours, Red Point, Cream Point and Apricot Point in both sexes. In addition there are Torties which are nearly always female (occasionally a male Tortie can be produced but this is a genetic anomaly and they nearly always prove to be infertile) and can come in all the colours that are shown above in the 'Traditional Colours' section except Apricot. (there is no such thing as an Apricot Tortie) The red colour is controlled by a sex linked gene called the Orange Gene or O. It is a dominant gene so if the cat has the gene they display it (red cannot be carried) The O gene is found on the X chromosome. Females have two X chromosomes and so can have one O gene or two, males have only one X chromosome and so can only have one O chromosome. If a female has two O chromosomes she will be Red, Cream or Apricot, if she has only one O chromosome then she will be a Tortie. A male having one O chromosome is a Red, Cream or Apricot.

A Red Point is a Seal or Chocolate that has one copy of the Orange Gene if male or two copies if female.

A Cream is a Blue orLilac that has one copy of the Orange Gene if male or two copies if female.

An Apricot is a Cream which has at least one set of the Dilute Modifier Gene which modifies the Cream into Apricot and also. If the cat is female and has at least one copy of the Dilute Modifier Gene the cat is called a Caramel Tortie.
