Siamese & Oriental Cat Names: Ideas for Pedigree Kittens

📖 3-minute readBy Ross Davies — GCCF Breeder, Judge & Behaviourist

A Siamese deserves a name with a little elegance — something that suits the breed’s striking points, sapphire eyes and famously talkative character. This guide gathers Siamese and Oriental cat name ideas for pedigree kittens, from the breed’s own naming heritage to names matched to each point colour, and shows you how to generate breed-fitting registered names in seconds with our free Kitten Name Generator.

A breed with naming heritage

The Siamese carries more naming history than almost any other breed. Its traditional Thai name, Wichien-maat, is usually translated as “moon diamond” — a lovely thread to pull on when you are looking for something with meaning. Long associated with the temples and royal households of old Siam, the breed lends itself naturally to names that feel regal, exotic or a touch mysterious. And because Siamese are wonderfully vocal, plenty of breeders enjoy a knowing nod to that chatter — Echo, Melody or Chatterbox all wear well.

Names that suit each point colour

One of the most satisfying ways to name a Siamese is to take a cue from its points. For a seal point, the deep browns of Sable, Onyx, Cocoa, Coffee or Mocha are a perfect match. Blue points suit cool, soft names — Sky, Cobalt, Bluebell, Misty or Dove. For chocolate points, lean into Truffle, Hazel, Cocoa or Maple; for the delicate lilac point, Lavender, Dove, Pearl or Ivory. Red and cream points shine with Saffron, Ginger, Amber, Honey or Marmalade, while cinnamon and caramel almost name themselves. If you would like to know which colours a pairing can actually produce before you plan a colour-led litter, our Siamese colour predictor works it out for you.

Oriental and Eastern names

Nothing fits the breed quite like a nod to its origins. Our generator’s Oriental & Siam theme is built for exactly this, with names such as Ming, Suki, Mandarin, Lotus, Jade, Dragon, Geisha, Mikado, Monsoon, Saffron, Kismet and Sari. They sound graceful read aloud, they honour the breed’s heritage, and they are the sort of distinctive names no generic pet-name list will offer you. Mix them with a point-colour idea — “Jade” for a blue-eyed girl, “Mikado” for a confident seal boy — and a whole litter hangs together beautifully.

Traditional, modern or show-stopping?

Think about where the name will be heard. A kitten heading to the show bench wants something elegant or dramatic that a steward can read aloud with a flourish — Cleopatra, Apollo, Sapphire or Maharaja. A cat that will sit at the heart of your breeding programme suits something timeless and dignified, because the name may echo down pedigrees for years. And a kitten bound for a pet home deserves a name a new owner will love saying every day — often a shorter, warmer one. The good news is the breed carries all three registers with ease.

Naming a Siamese litter with the generator

To name a whole litter at once, open the Kitten Name Generator, choose the Oriental & Siam theme (or any of the other twenty-one), set a sex if you want boy or girl names, and add your prefix so each suggestion shows its true length against the GCCF’s 30-character rule. If you follow the traditional letter-of-the-litter system, set a start letter and every name will begin with it. For the full rules behind registered names, see our guide to naming a pedigree kitten, and for more themes our litter naming themes guide.

FAQ

What does the Siamese’s Thai name mean?

The traditional Thai name, Wichien-maat, is commonly translated as “moon diamond” — a fitting nod to the breed’s luminous, jewel-like eyes.

Should I name by point colour?

It is a popular and elegant approach. Match the name to the kitten’s points — or use the colour predictor and our Siamese genetics guide to plan a colour-themed litter in advance.

Do Oriental cats use the same names?

Yes — Orientals share the Siamese type in full colour, so the same heritage and colour-led ideas work beautifully. The Oriental & Siam theme in the generator suits both.

Names are ideas only and are not checked against existing registrations. Always follow the current GCCF naming rules.
